This project for the offshore diamond mining company De Beers Marine consisted of the complete stripping of the existing/redundant mining plant of approximately 800 tonnes in Cape Town dry-dock prior to a new pre-fabricated modular mining plant of ±1000 tonnes, with ±200 tonnes of equipment being installed.

The stripping component required a detailed risk analysis of the modular sections being conducted prior to them being cut out; rigged; and removed to the quay by a 1400 tonne mobile crane.  Below deck – the Upper Tween-deck, Lower Tween-deck and Tank-Top; all auxiliary mining equipment and pipework had to be removed (approximately 100 tonnes) and all steelwork “made good”.  Approximately 200 tonnes of new steelwork was pre-manufactured and installed which consisted of additional hull stiffeners, deck stiffeners and general steelwork.

Belmet was also responsible for all new pipework i.e. the pre-fabrication, site installation and on-site pipe modifications.
