The GSF Jack Ryan is a Glomar 456 Class ultra deepwater drillship owned by Transocean and is currently operating off the coast of West Africa.

The contract for the upgrade was awarded to Belmet by 3C Metal South Africa, a specialised manufacturer of high pressure piping, who also happen to be one of Belmet’s sub-contractors.

The project consisted of various intricate steel structures including complete new aft and forward decks above the MCU and a platform above the Mud Logging Unit with a suited staircase structure for improved accessibility.  The total net weight of the fabricated steelwork amounted to over 54 tonnes.

All the steelwork was fabricated to the AWS D1.1 specification, with third party inspections carried out by both the contractor 3CMetal South Africa and the vessel owners Transocean.

The project was successfully completed over a period of 7 weeks with a labour intensity of 138 hours per ton; this included all fabrication activities as well as the weighing of each structure using a load cell; load testing of lifting pad eyes; fitting of grating; trial assembly; and final assembly work.

The packaging for shipping purposes was also completed by Belmet.
